Breast augmentation surgery, which is commonly referred to as breast enlargement surgery, is a form of cosmetic surgery that involves enlarging the size and possibly improving the the shape of a woman's breasts. In order to increase the size of the breast, special breast implants made of silicone and saline are placed inside the breast.
What does the procedure of breast enlargement surgery involve ?

In order to insert the implants necessary to enlarge the breasts, an incision is generally made beneath the natural crease located beneath the breasts.  This way, the appearance of scarring is kept to a minimum.  In some cases, however, the incision will be made along the edge of the areola or even at the armpit instead.  After the implants have been put into place, the incision is closed with fine sutures and then taped in order to provided added support.
How long does breast enlargement surgey take ?

In most cases, breast augmentation surgery takes only about two hours to complete, though it may be necessary to stay overnight in the hospital afterward.  Most patients are able to recover from the surgery and return to normal activity in as little as one to two weeks following the surgery.
Risks Associated with Breast Enlargement Surgery

Although breast augmentation surgery can help improve the overall appearance of the breast, there are many risks that are associated with undergoing any type of surgical procedure.  Some of these include:

    * Bleeding
    * Bruising
    * Infection

Other potential side effects that are specifically associated with breast augmentation surgery include:

    * Altered nipple sensation - the nipple may become less or more sensitive following surgery.

    * Asymmetrical results - although care is taken to make the breasts look symmetrical, it is possible that the breasts may appear uneven following surgery.  If this occurs and if the patient is unhappy with the results, an additional surgery may be necessary.

    * Development of capsular contracture - characterized by a tightening of the scar tissue surrounding the implant, which may cause pain or cause the breast to appear misshapen.  An additional surgery may be necessary to correct the problem.

    * Firmness or discomfort - scar issue or calcium deposits may cause the breasts to become very firm, though calcium deposits can be detected by a mammography and can be removed through surgery.

    * Formation of haematoma - occurs when a pocket of blood develops, causing pain and swelling that needs to be removed through an additional surgical procedure.

Additional side effects may occur depending upon the method used for inserting the implant:

If the submuscular method is used, the implant is placed beneath major muscles in the chest.  Although this results in a deeper placement and puts more padding over the implant, it does cause the breasts to feel firmer.

Subglandular implants, on the other hand, are inserted above the major muscles and results in a faster healing time and less pain.  Mammograms are harder to perform with this type of implant, however, and there is some research to indicate that capsular contracture is more common with this type of implant.
